Miguel Ángel Jiménez

After working his way up through the caddie ranks at his Costa del Sol home club of Torrequebrada, Miguel Ángel Jiménez earned his European Tour card by finishing sixth at the 1988 Qualifying School, was 85th in his first full season (1989) and in 1992 broke through for his first tour title, the Piaget Open in Belgium. Severiano Ballesteros’ vice captain in the 1997 Ryder Cup at Valderrama, and the only Spaniard to win the Volvo Masters (1999), he emerged in his 40s as the “elder statesman” of Spanish golf, enjoying his most successful years on the European Tour. His four victories made him the most prolific champion on the 2004 Tour, when he also equalled his career-best fourth place finish on the order of merit. In 1999 he lost a play-off to Tiger Woods in the 1999 American Express World Golf Championship at Valderrama, and the following year finished joint second behind the American (albeit by 15 shots!) in the US Open at Pebble Beach. In 2008 he won the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Unfinished business at Valderrama SEVE BALLESTROS went close in 1988. The late Spanish star finished second two shots behind Nick Faldo in the inaugural Volvo Masters at Valderrama.
