  Volvo Mundial Match Play

Volvo World Match Play

Golf in its purest form

Several of the world’s best players set to return to Spain to play golf in its most competitive, challenging and intriguing form: match play.

In an eagerly awaited first for top international golf, the Volvo World Match Play Championship format will involve a stellar 16-player field divided into four groups of four players representing all the continents and main tours, competing for a prize fund of 3.25 million euros at one of southern Spain’s most stunning resorts – with the seedings based on their Official World Golf Ranking.

Although the Match Play Championship is one of the oldest and most historic tournaments of the European Tour, this year features a fresh look in just about every aspect of the event. While the 16-man field will not be finalised until later in the year, it occupies a crucial place in the closing stages of the Race to Dubai.

This is the 45th edition of the World Match Play Championship and Volvo’s first year as title sponsor, having hosted the 21st and final Volvo Masters at Club de Golf Valderrama in 2008. The Championship will be held in Spain for the first time in its history, moving from Wentworth Club as 16 of the world’s best players go head-to-head in classic match play golf over the magnificent 7,439-yard (6,803-metre) course at Finca Cortesín designed by Cabell B Robinson.

Crème de la crème of past champions

The indomitable Arnold Palmer was the inaugural winner back in 1964 and since then the World Match Play champions’ roll-call has included the finest players in the contemporary era. In the early years of the tournament, they also were five-times winner Gary Player, Bob Charles, Jack Nicklaus (who defeated Lee Trevino in the 1970 final), Tom Weiskopf, Hale Irwin, David Graham, Graham Marsh, Isao Aoki and Bill Rogers. Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros dominated the event from 1980 to 1986, before Ian Woosnam, Sandy Lyle and Nick Faldo took over the baton. Ballesteros won a fifth title in 1991, Corey Pavin secured the trophy in 1993, and Ernie Els – still the most successful participant, with seven victories – won three in a row from 1994 to 1996. Vijay Singh, Mark O’Meara, Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood collected the next four titles, respectively, followed by Woosnam’s third trophy in 2001, another hat-trick by Els (who is also the defending champion from 2007) and victories by Michael Campbell and Paul Casey. In all, players from 10 different countries have won the title: United States, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Spain, Wales, England, Fiji and Scotland.
