Four years earlier, as a 17-year-old schoolboy competing in the Canarias Open de Espa\u00f1a, he had become the first amateur to lead a European Tour event after 54 holes, eventually finishing 22nd. During an exceptional amateur career, he equalled Mark Mouland\u2019s record as the youngest winner of the British Boys Championship (2001), and while at Oklahoma State University won the Big 12 Championship Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006 and both the Jack Nicklaus and Fred Haskins awards, presented annually to the nation\u2019s best college golfer.
