Poulter to defend title at the Volvo World Match Play Championship

Defending Champion, Ian Poulter, has confirmed he will defend his title at the 2012 Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín, Spain, from May 17-20, 2012. The 2012 Championship will once again attract the world’s best golfers with the final 24 man field to be announced in the weeks after the conclusion of the US Masters.

The final field of the 47th edition of this historic tournament looks set to match the unprecedented strength of the 2011 Championship. Repeating last year’s successfully amended format, on arrival at Finca Cortesín the players will be divided into eight groups of three players to play in a round-robin group format on Thursday and Friday to decide which 16 players progress to Saturday’s knock-out stage with the semi-finals and final played on Sunday.

Volvo World Match Play improved and moved to May 2011

The Volvo World Match Play Championship is set for a new date in 2011 and will be held 19th to 22nd May, 2011 at Finca Cortesin Hotel in Southern Spain.

Securing a new permanent date for the Championship has been at the very heart of Monday’s announcement. With the global schedule becoming ever more congested in the Autumn months the aim is that the Volvo World Match Play will now be the sole dominant European Tour event played in the new date.

The 16 man field will also be increased to allow 24 of the world’s best players to compete. The prize fund for the 2011 Championship increases to €3.4 million with a first prize of €800,000, the highest on the European Tour outside of the Majors, World Golf Championship events and the Dubai World Golf Championship.

Eight groups of 3 on the round robin will play till Saturday morning with quarter final that same evening while semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday to 18 holes.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia was delighted to hear the news and hopes he will be able to include the tournament in his schedule, commenting, “It is great news that the Volvo World Match Play Championship has secured this key date in the schedule. Last year’s tournament was fantastic – Finca Cortesin provided a wonderfully dramatic backdrop for some thrilling match ups. Spain’s wonderful golf facilities were proudly shown around the world in doing such a wonderful job in hosting this historic tournament for the first time.  I think we all enjoyed the ‘champions league’ style groupings and I believe that the increased field and amended format in 2011 will make for an even more thrilling Championship.”

“Changing my shoes with Retief Goosen”

Tom Jamieson was the winner of the first prize of our Volvo World Match Play competition including proam spot and a night accommodation at Elba Estepona Thalasso Spa 5 star hotel. Tom kindly wrote a few words about his experience last week:

    Jose,
Just a short note to say it was a pleasure to meet you last week and that I had an unforgettable experience at Finca Cortesin.  I’ve put together a few paragraphs to try and capture the experience but I’m not sure words can do it justice!
Although I had entered the competition when I got the e-mail telling me I had won the prize I couldn’t believe it and my natural Scottish scepticism kicked in!!  However, after a couple of emails and calls to establish it was indeed true I couldn’t wait to get there and attempt to play golf with some of the biggest names in the game.
After a couple of wrong turns on the way from Malaga I eventually arrived at the impressive Elba Estepona late on Tuesday evening and my Pro-am passes were waiting as promised.  A quick call to Jessica to confirm when I had to report at the course and I was raring to go!
The day itself was fantastic, Volvo deserve a lot of praise for making it all possible and for providing some amazing gifts and souvenirs and the course itself was absolutely superb.  It was also quite surreal changing my shoes with Retief Gossen sitting on one side of me and Sergio Garcia on the other!!
I was drawn to play with Scott Strange and he and his caddy, Adam, were very friendly and helped eased the nerves.  The shotgun start was ideal and meant that I didn’t have to endure the trauma of trying to get the ball off the first tee in front of a large crowd!  Thankfully I managed to play quite well and even experienced polite applause from the gallery for a couple of my shots!!  The team finished the day on 5 under par but unfortunately this didn’t quite match the performance of the winners who managed to get round in the remarkable total of 19 under.
A lifetime of memories from a day to remember and thanks to all at Golf in Spain and Volvo for making it possible.
    Cheers

    Tom

Patience is a lucrative virtue for Fisher

He was dubbed “The English Patient” by the Spanish press. Inscrutably focused, betraying hardly any emotion as he strode purposefully around the Finca Cortesín course, ranked 10th of the 16 players in the starting field of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, Ross Fisher beat Camilo Villegas on the first day, then lost to Lee Westwood and defeated Jeev Milkha Singh on the second day to top Group D and gain a semi-final place against reigning US Masters champion Angel Cabrera.
