The Valderrama
Golf Course For the first time ever, the 32nd edition of one of the world's most famous golf tournaments will be held outside the U.K. Ever since the first tournament was held in 1927 the matches have been played either in the United States or the U.K. It was officially announced back in 1993 that this prestigious event would be held in Spain. Already in spring 1992 the Bolivian billionaire and owner of the renowned Valderrama golf course, Mr. Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, declared that he would do his very best to ensure that the Ryder Cup tournament would be played in Valderrama in 1997.
It surely is a tribute to the quality of the course that Valderrama has been chosen by the Ryder Cup committee. Designed by the doyen of course architects, Robert Trent Jones, the Valderrama golf course is located in the municipality of San Roque, in the province of Cadiz, at the western limits of the Costa del Sol, and only a stone's throw from the world famous strait of Gibraltar. Valderrama has been officially voted Europe's no. 1 golf course and is also home to the renowned VOLVO MASTERS. The course is one of the continent's toughest challenges and it is a feather in any golfer's cap to be able to boast of having played there. With recent improvements to the layout, Valderrama is in prime condition and Mr. Patiño only aims to make it better: the "Augusta of Europe".
