Noted for his extraordinary long-hitting, Álvaro Quirós showed he had the complete game when he won the 2007 Alfred Dunhill Championship in Africa in his first appearance as a full European Tour member. After struggling with injury the rest of his debut season, he emerged the following season with victory in the Portugal Masters, made it three consecutive years with a win after collecting the 2009 Qatar Masters (which moved him into the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time) and savoured the pleasure of winning his national title, the Open de España, in 2010.
