The traditional press conference to present the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters was held today at Royal Valderrama Club. The official presentation was presided over by Valderrama general manager Javier Reviriego, the deputy minister for tourism with the Junta de Andalucía (regional government), Manuel Alejandro Cardenete, a representative of San Roque Town Hall and Pablo Mansilla, president of the Royal Andalucian Golf Federation.
Confirming the previously announced news that Jon Rahm would be teeing up in the tournament, Javier Reviriego thanked the world number one for his support. He also referred to measures adopted by the club as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, replacing some lateral grass areas with pine bark, commonly known as “munch”, and noted that the plan was to maintain the course’s high level of difficulty for this year’s tournament. Reviriego once again emphasised, without going into details, that Valderrama’s objective was to ensure that the tournament continued to grow in the future, indicating that he “hopes to have news soon” and adding that , if rumours of a joint circuit between the European Tour and U.S. PGA Tour materialised, he envisaged Valderrama being one of the venues.
Meanwhile, deputy minister for tourism Manuel Alejandro Cardenete highlighted data on tourism’s solid recovery in recent months, surpassing Cataluña for the first time as the premier national destination, and forecast a total of five million visitors during the autumn period.
Jon Rahm Returns to Valderrama
World number one and reigning U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm confirmed back in August that he would return to Royal Valderrama Club this year.
In his last appearance at Valderrama in 2019, Rahm finished runner-up to Christiaan Bezuidenhout in that year’s edition of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.
“I have some unfinished business at Valderrama, that’s for sure,” said Rahm. “As a Spaniard, it’s a golf course where we all want to win. As soon as you arrive you get a real sense of the history of the venue and the great moments that have taken place there over the last 30 years. To be a part of that would really be an honour.
“I’ve had nothing but great experiences of playing in front of home crowds. Spanish golf fans are truly special, and I can’t wait to see them lining the fairways again.”
Great news coming from Mijas Golf in Costa del Sol. Both courses, Los Lagos and Los Olivos will now again be fully operational after their maintenance ends. This means low season rates until September 19th and both courses available thereafter.
Good to see our friends in Mijas Golf fully operational again.
Our latest promotional campaign seeks just one simple thing… to encourage all golfing travellers to return. We are keen to see our clients enjoy a Spanish golf break again, just the same as if it was their first one.
That is why we have launched this self-produced video, which also marks a return to the celebrations for our 25th anniversary – unfortunately postponed last year due to COVID.
We hope you like it.
Fortunately, travel restrictions are gradually being eased and Spain is Europe’s leading country for vaccinations, with more than 70% of the population fully vaccinated. With a current average of 0.00195% of the population infected, some restrictions remain in place but life (almost) seems to be returning to normal – or at least the “new normal”.

But you need to be quick, because occupation due to previously postponed trips now being taken up is already very high for some weeks. Don’t miss out on your golfing holiday!

Spain is full of relatively unknown golfing holiday jewels just waiting to be discovered. Most international golfers, for example, would not be familiar with Águilas, on the south-eastern Mediterranean coast. If that includes you, we are offering the opportunity to explore this fascinating area of Spain.
These two packages include accommodation at the Hotel Puerto Juan Montiel and “desert” golf at nearby courses, as well as a special golfing treat: the chance to play at a course whose design was personally overseen by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. Of the 400-plus Nicklaus Design courses around the world, only an exclusive group are recognised with his coveted “Signature” status, and Alhama is one of them.
Alhama Signature is a spectacular desert-style course featuring five large lakes, more than 100 bunkers and native Mediterranean flora and fauna, and offering exceptional views towards the Sierra Espuña mountain range and nature park.
In addition to Nicklaus’s creation, there are three other golfing delights included in these two packages. Depending on whether you decide on a three-night, one-week or longer stay, your golfing options will include green fees at Aguilón, Desert Springs and Lorca Resort.
Águilas is a picturesque seaside town at the western end of Murcia’s Costa Cálida (“Warm Coast”), not far from the border with Almería province. The municipality (population: 35,000) extends along 25 kilometres of beach coastline, and the village itself is built on a small peninsula between two bays and overlooked by an 18th century castle on the site of a Carthagian fortification.
Conveniently located opposite the marina, the four-star Hotel Puerto Juan Montiel offers guests a sixth-floor spa with stunning views, a restaurant and tavern, mini-golf and pádel tennis courts. They can also organise boating trips, sailing classes and numerous other water sports and nautical activities.
Take a one minute look at Aguilon on oir vídeo. One for Desert Springs also available.
In order to encourage tourism to return with complete safety, Andalucía is providing all non-resident international travellers with free COVID-19 insurance for stays at any type of officially registered (regulated) establishment in the region until 31 December.
The coverage includes:
- Medical, surgical, hospitalisation and pharmaceutical costs related to recovery from COVID-19. Those covered are the patient (the person diagnosed with COVID-19) and companions.
- Transportation and repatriation. If a patient needs to be transported or repatriated, their insured companions will also be covered by this insurance. The costs of transportation or repatriation, to their habitual residence or where the repatriated patient is hospitalised, will be covered. If the insured parties are minors or disabled and have no close and trusted companion, a responsible person will accompany them to the patient’s place of residence or hospitalisation.
- Transportation and repatriation in the event of death due to COVID-19. The insurance covers necessary arrangements at the place of the client’s death and the costs of the companions’ transportation to the place of burial.
- Costs for the extended hotel stay by the insured and companions. The insured party’s stay at a hotel following hospitalisation or under prescribed medical quarantine is covered.
In order for this insurance to be applicable you will have to stay in an officially registered (regulated) establishment. If you meet this requirement, you will be automatically covered while travelling, with no need for additional contracts. In case you need any coverage while travelling you will have to contact… although we will be able to assist you with any documentation or help you require.
It was an era when the early internet “bubble” was in vogue, when Google and Facebook were still notional concepts. “Golf will never be sold online”, was a common response I heard at the time.
Fortunately, they were wrong and the company’s other projects, in addition to Golf in Spain®, are still here – 60,000 bookings later. The path has certainly not been one that could have been envisaged 25 years ago, and there have been some difficult moments, including the current situation.
Nevertheless, our key principles have been discretion, financial solvency, and essentially working behind the scenes.
We are proud that we have had more than 18 million page visits and as many as three million online users who have discovered useful information about golf in Spain. Just think what this volume of business means to the sector, even beyond the 400,000 golf rounds that we have sold. Continue reading
Andalucía’s regional government is offering local-based tourists up to 50% discount on travel accommodation, subject to certain conditions.
The getaway must be booked through a travel agency registered with Andalucía Segura (such as GolfinSpain) and include a minimum of two nights’ accommodation at an establishment also officially subscribed to Andalucía Segura.
Those taking advantage need to be registered as residents (albeit part-time) on the town hall “padrón” in the municipality where they live. No distinction is made between Spaniards and foreigners, provided they fulfil the above conditions, live in Andalucía and enjoy their holiday break in a different municipality to their home one.
We have already prepared several packages related to the offer, which is aimed at encouraging people in Andalucía’s eight provinces to enjoy “staycations” rather than travelling abroad or elsewhere in Spain. With over 100 golf courses – considerably more than any other region in Spain – Andalucía is ideally placed to offer golfers, especially, a memorable getaway experience, at a welcome discount!
The voucher (available up to a maximum of €500) was introduced from 1 October and can be used until 31 December 2021. It covers hotels, tourist apartments and rural rental properties, but is not valid for restaurants or other services.
If you are interested in subsidising a golfing (or other holidays) in Andalucía by applying for this tourism voucher, don’t hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help you learn where it is valid and how to apply.
Yesterday we attended the formal presentation of the Solheim Cup, which will be held for the first time in Spain from 18 to 24 September 2023. The venue, Finca Cortesín, had been revealed previously, and yesterday the dates were also confirmed officially – one week before the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.
This is excellent news for Spanish golf, which once again has the opportunity of hosting an event at the highest international level. The coup follows three years of hard work and effort by the main person behind the initiative, Íñigo Aramburu, managing director of Deporte & Business, a company which has been organising Ladies European Tour events since 2002.
Costa del Sol Tourism joins PING and Rolex as the main sponsors, while Andalucía Tourism, Acosol, Marbella Town Hall and Benahavís Town Hall are the official partners. A key union of forces without which it would not have been possible to host the event…
The initial project proposed hosting the event in Marbella, but in the end it was decided to opt for the Casares course – once again highlighting Finca Cortesín’s great vision in always aiming to maintain its status as a top-level competition course.
